The 7 Canonical Qira'at
1. Qira'at of Nafi' al-Madani
Qalun and Warsh narrate this recitation, which originates from Madinah. Communities across North and West Africa widely practice it, particularly the Warsh transmission.
2. Qira'at of Ibn Kathir al-Makki
Al-Bazzi and Qunbul transmit this Makkah-based recitation, one of the oldest documented styles. It comes from the very region where the Quran was first revealed.
3. Qira'at of Abu Amr al-Basri
Al-Duri and Al-Susi carried this style forward from Basra, Iraq. It still holds influence in parts of Sudan and East Africa today.
4. Qira'at of Ibn Amir al-Dimashqi
Hisham and Ibn Dhakwan passed down this recitation from Damascus. It reflects the Levantine tradition of Quranic recitation.
5. Qira'at of Asim al-Kufi
Hafs and Shu'bah narrate this Qira'ah, by far the most widely used in the world today. You'll find the Hafs 'an Asim transmission in most printed Mus'hafs, and most online Quran classes worldwide teach it, including here in Canada.
6. Qira'at of Hamza al-Kufi
Khalaf and Khallad transmit this Kufa-based recitation, known for its distinct phonetic features. Specialized Qira'at circles still study it closely.
7. Qira'at of Al-Kisai al-Kufi
Abul Harith and Al-Duri carry this recitation forward. It also comes from Kufa and completes the set of seven authenticated readings.
